VU Diploma in English Language Teaching
The Diploma in English Language Teaching is a 1-year program that has been designed for students who want to improve their teaching skills. It has also for those students who are interested in applying for a BS program in ELT. It is also a great option for students who have graduated in another field but want to switch to teaching.
By completing this program, students will have a solid foundation in English language teaching. After completing the Diploma in ELT, students can apply for a BS program in ELT at Virtual University with an exemption.
The Diploma in English Language Teaching trains practical skills needed for an English teaching career. This program provides training to improve teaching skills and introduces new teaching methods. The focus is on language learning theories, second language teaching methods, curriculum and syllabus design, designing classroom activities, and testing and assessment procedures. The main goal is to develop students’ knowledge and understanding of the English language.
Objectives
- Offer fresh graduates and English language teachers a chance to deepen their understanding of English language teaching from theoretical and practical perspectives.
- Explore and research the problems related to ELT in Pakistan.
- Teach effective pedagogical approaches and tools for teaching listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in different learning scenarios.
- Provide techniques and tools for teaching English as a second language.
- Teach the standard procedures of curricula and syllabi design and development.
- Help learners understand how materials are developed for interactive and communicative language teaching.
- Enable students to comprehend standard assessment procedures for ongoing assessments in semester systems, by developing their expertise in designing and conducting current testing techniques.
Eligibility
Applicants must possess a bachelor’s degree (BA/BSc/ADP) or equivalent qualification from an HEC-recognized university/institution, with ‘English’ as a compulsory or optional subject, and a minimum of 45% marks or a CGPA of 2.00 out of 4.
Course Exemption
Course exemption is not allowed for this program.
Degree Duration
The program is structured as a one-year course, comprising two semesters with each semester having a duration of 18 weeks. Each semester consists of five courses.
Assessment of Study Progress
Student’s academic progress is assessed continuously during the semester through assignments, online quizzes, Graded Discussion Boards (GDBs), midterm exams, and final exams. The midterm and final exams, which make up 80-85% of a course, are managed at the locations of the virtual university’s designated exam centers all over Pakistan as well as overseas.

Award of Diploma
To receive the Diploma in English language teaching, students must complete a minimum of two semesters of coursework, consisting of at least 30 credit hours, and achieve a minimum CGPA of 2.00 out of 4.
