VU Diploma in Linguistics

The Diploma in Linguistics is a one-year program consisting of 30 credit hours. The basic aim is to provide a deeper understanding of linguistics and prepare the students for future studies in related fields of ELT and second-language teaching in the future. The diploma program also provides a baseline to students who are seeking to switch their fields of study. 

Students will develop critical thinking skills and an awareness of how language is influenced by social and cultural surroundings through the study of phonology, phonetics, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics. 

It will also enhance students’ language skills and ability to learn and solve problems through multitasking. After completing the diploma in linguistics, the students may also apply for course exemptions in BS ELT programs of virtual university.

Objectives

  • Ensuring that students have a solid understanding of linguistic concepts and terminologies is crucial for improving their ability to describe language.
  • The objective is to enable students to understand and apply the concepts and techniques of language learning in their language classes to look into and solve linguistic problems.
  • To encourage students to critically analyze and evaluate language teaching strategies and materials.
  • The objective is to improve students’ language proficiency by giving them knowledge of current problems facing communities with various language orientations.
  • To encourage insightful thinking and assist students in understanding social and psychological concepts related to language acquisition and development.
  • Motivate students to reflect on and evaluate their linguistic aptitude and abilities.

Eligibility

Applicants must possess a bachelor’s degree (BA/BSc/ADP) or equivalent qualification from an HEC-recognized university/institution, with ‘English’ as a compulsory or optional subject, and a minimum of 45% marks or a CGPA of 2.00 out of 4.

Course Exemption

Course exemption is not allowed for this program.

Diploma Duration

The program is structured as a one-year course, comprising two semesters with each semester having a duration of 18 weeks. Each semester consists of five courses.

Assessment of Study Progress

Student’s academic progress is assessed continuously during the semester through assignments, online quizzes, Graded Discussion Boards (GDBs), midterm exams, and final exams. The midterm and final exams, which make up 80-85% of a course, are managed at the locations of the virtual university’s designated exam centers all over Pakistan as well as overseas.

Award of Diploma

To receive the Diploma in Linguistics, students must complete a minimum of two semesters of coursework, consisting of at least 30 credit hours, and achieve a minimum CGPA of 2.00 out of 4.
